FIP Calculator: Fielding Independent Pitching Explained & Calculated

Calculate Your Pitcher's Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP)

For partial innings, use decimals (e.g., 180.1 for 180 and 1/3 innings, 180.2 for 180 and 2/3 innings).
A league-average constant, typically around 3.2.

Unravel the true skill of a pitcher with our FIP Calculator. Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is a crucial sabermetrics statistic measuring a pitcher's performance based on outcomes they control: home runs, walks, hit by pitches, and strikeouts. Use this tool to predict future pitcher success, removing the variance of defensive play and luck. Get instant, accurate FIP calculations for any pitcher.

Formula:

The Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) formula is a powerful sabermetric tool designed to evaluate a pitcher's performance based primarily on the outcomes they control, independent of their defense. It is calculated as:

FIP = ((13 * HR) + (3 * (BB + HBP)) - (2 * K)) / IP + FIP Constant

Where:

  • HR: Total Home Runs allowed by the pitcher.
  • BB: Total Walks (Bases on Balls) allowed by the pitcher.
  • HBP: Total Batters Hit By Pitch.
  • K: Total Strikeouts recorded by the pitcher.
  • IP: Total Innings Pitched by the pitcher.
  • FIP Constant: A league-average constant (typically around 3.20 to align FIP with ERA values), which can vary slightly season to season. This adjusts FIP to an ERA-like scale for easier comparison.
