Use our free Bike Cadence & Speed Calculator to precisely determine your cycling velocity from pedal RPM, or conversely, calculate the ideal cadence for a target speed. Input your wheel circumference and gear ratios to fine-tune your ride and achieve peak performance. Perfect for road, mountain, and e-bikes!
Formula:
The core formulas for bike cadence and speed calculation are derived from the relationship between wheel circumference, gear ratio, and pedal revolutions per minute (RPM):
- Gear Ratio (GR) = Front Chainring Teeth / Rear Cog Teeth
- Distance per Pedal Revolution = Wheel Circumference (mm) × GR
- Speed (km/h) = (Cadence (RPM) × Wheel Circumference (mm) × GR × 60) / 1,000,000
- Cadence (RPM) = (Speed (km/h) × 1,000,000) / (Wheel Circumference (mm) × GR × 60)
Where:
- Cadence: Pedal revolutions per minute.
- Speed: Velocity of the bike, typically in kilometers per hour (km/h) or miles per hour (mph).
- Wheel Circumference: The total outer circumference of your bike's wheel and tire, in millimeters.
- Front Chainring Teeth: Number of teeth on the front gear.
- Rear Cog Teeth: Number of teeth on the rear cassette cog currently engaged.
