Diabetes Mellitus Diagnosis Criteria Calculator (ADA)

Calculate Your Diabetes Diagnosis Based on ADA Criteria

Typically for symptomatic individuals.

Quickly assess your risk for diabetes mellitus or prediabetes using the American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria. Our free online calculator helps you interpret your HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and random plasma glucose results to determine if you meet the diagnostic thresholds. Understand your glucose regulation status instantly.

Formula:

The calculator evaluates your test results against the following American Diabetes Association (ADA) diagnostic criteria:

  • Diabetes Mellitus:
    • HbA1c ≥ 6.5% OR
    • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) ≥ 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) OR
    • 2-hour Plasma Glucose (OGTT) ≥ 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) OR
    • Random Plasma Glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) (in patients with classic symptoms of hyperglycemia or hyperglycemic crisis)
  • Prediabetes:
    • HbA1c 5.7 – 6.4% OR
    • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) 100 – 125 mg/dL (5.6 – 6.9 mmol/L) OR
    • 2-hour Plasma Glucose (OGTT) 140 – 199 mg/dL (7.8 – 11.0 mmol/L)
  • Normal Glucose Tolerance: All values below prediabetes thresholds.

Variables:

  • HbA1c: Glycated hemoglobin percentage, reflecting average blood sugar over 2-3 months.
  • Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG): Blood glucose level after an overnight fast (at least 8 hours).
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Blood glucose level 2 hours after consuming a 75-gram glucose drink.
  • Random Plasma Glucose: Blood glucose level at any time, typically used in symptomatic individuals.
