Retention Factor For Thin Layer TLC Plate Calculator

This calculator calculates the retention factors (rf) for thin layer using distance from the starting point to the center of the spot, distance from the starting point to the solvent front values.

Calculating Retention Factors (Rf) for Thin Layer Chromatography

Upon the development and viewing of a TLC plate, the starting point and solvent front (the level the solvent reached when the plate was removed from the developing tank) are marked and all spots observed on the plate are circled in lead pencil. The location of each spot on the plate is then represented numerically by calculating a Retention Factor (Rf).

Retention Factor For Thin Layer TLC Plate Calculation

Formula:

Rf = a ÷ b

Where,

a = The distance from the starting point to the center of the spot on the TLC plate,

b = Tthe distance from the starting point to the solvent front,

Rf = Retention Factor
