Threshold Odor Number (TON) Calculator

Calculate Your Threshold Odor Number

Use our free Threshold Odor Number (TON) Calculator to accurately assess odor intensity in water or air samples. Determine the precise dilution factor needed for odor detection, a critical step in environmental quality control and olfactometry. Understand and manage odor pollution effectively.

Formula:

The Threshold Odor Number (TON) is a measure of the odor intensity of a sample and is calculated using the following formula:

TON = (Vs + Vd) / Vs

  • Vs: Volume of the odorous sample (e.g., in mL)
  • Vd: Volume of odor-free diluent added until the odor is just barely detectable (e.g., in mL)

This formula represents the total volume of the diluted sample divided by the original sample volume at the odor threshold.
