Use our free Steel I Beam Center of Gravity Calculator to quickly find the centroid of any I-beam cross-section. Essential for structural analysis, design, and ensuring stability in construction projects. Get precise results for both symmetrical and asymmetrical beam profiles instantly.
Formula:
To calculate the vertical center of gravity (Y¯) from the bottom of an I-beam section:
Y¯ = (∑(Ai × yi)) / ∑Ai
Where:- Ai = Area of individual section (top flange, web, bottom flange)
- yi = Centroid of individual section from the bottom reference axis
- Y¯ = Overall vertical centroid (Center of Gravity) of the I-beam cross-section from the bottom
This calculator breaks the I-beam into three simple rectangles (top flange, web, bottom flange) and applies the principle of moments to find the combined centroid.
