Shaft Size Calculator: Determine Optimal Shaft Diameter

Calculate Your Required Shaft Diameter

Use our Shaft Size Calculator to quickly determine the ideal shaft diameter for your power transmission needs. Input power, RPM, material yield strength, and factor of safety to ensure your designs are robust and efficient. This tool simplifies complex engineering calculations for mechanical components.

Formula:

The Shaft Size Calculator primarily uses the torsional shear stress formula to determine the required diameter (d).

First, calculate Torque (T):

T = (P * C) / RPM

Where:

  • P = Power transmitted
  • RPM = Rotational speed in revolutions per minute
  • C = Constant (9549 for P in kW and T in Nยทm; converts HP to kW before applying constant)

Next, calculate the Allowable Shear Stress (ฯ„allowable):

ฯ„allowable = (0.577 * Syt) / F.S.

Where:

  • Syt = Material Tensile Yield Strength
  • F.S. = Factor of Safety

Finally, the Shaft Diameter (d) is determined by:

d = ∛((16 * T) / (π * ฯ„allowable))

Where:

  • d = Shaft Diameter
  • T = Torque
  • π = Pi (~3.14159)
  • ฯ„allowable = Allowable Shear Stress
