Use our free Septic Tank Capacity & Drainfield Size Calculator to accurately estimate the required tank volume and leach field area for your property. This essential tool considers critical factors like number of bedrooms, soil type, and presence of a garbage disposal, providing key data for proper septic system design and compliance.

Septic System Sizing Logic Explained
This calculator estimates septic tank capacity and drainfield size based on common industry guidelines. Please note that actual requirements may vary significantly by local and state regulations.
- Septic Tank Capacity (Gallons): Primarily determined by the number of bedrooms.
- Bedrooms (BR) ≤ 2: 1000 Gallons
- BR = 3: 1000 Gallons
- BR = 4: 1250 Gallons
- BR ≥ 5: 1500 Gallons
- Add 250 Gallons if a Garbage Disposal is present.
- Estimated Daily Flow (Gallons Per Day, GPD): Also based on bedrooms, with an adjustment for garbage disposal.
- BR ≤ 2: 240 GPD
- BR = 3: 300 GPD
- BR = 4: 360 GPD
- BR ≥ 5: 420 GPD
- Add 60 GPD if a Garbage Disposal is present.
- Drainfield Size (Square Feet): Calculated using the Estimated Daily Flow and the Soil Absorption Rate.
Where GSFPD (Gallons per Square Foot per Day) values, based on typical soil types, are:Drainfield Size = Estimated Daily Flow / Soil Absorption Rate (GSFPD)- Rapidly Permeable Sand: 0.8 GSFPD
- Loamy Sand: 0.6 GSFPD
- Sandy Loam: 0.4 GSFPD
- Silt Loam / Loam: 0.3 GSFPD
- Clay Loam: 0.2 GSFPD
Note: These calculations provide general estimates. Always consult local health department regulations, perform a percolation test, and engage a qualified professional for final septic system design and permitting.
