Formula:
To round a number to the nearest thousand:
1. Look at the hundreds digit (the third digit from the right).
2. If the hundreds digit is 5 or greater (5, 6, 7, 8, or 9), round up: increase the thousands digit by one and change all digits to its right to zero.
3. If the hundreds digit is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4), round down: keep the thousands digit the same and change all digits to its right to zero.
Example: Round 4,567 to the nearest thousand. The hundreds digit is 5, so round up to 5,000.
Example: Round 4,321 to the nearest thousand. The hundreds digit is 3, so round down to 4,000.
