Understanding RLC Circuit Calculations
For a series RLC circuit, the key parameters are calculated as follows:
- Inductive Reactance (XL): The opposition offered by an inductor to the flow of alternating current.
XL = 2 π f L - Capacitive Reactance (XC): The opposition offered by a capacitor to the flow of alternating current.
XC = 1 / (2 π f C) - Total Reactance (X): The combined opposition from inductors and capacitors.
X = XL - XC - Impedance (Z): The total opposition to current flow in an AC circuit, combining resistance and reactance.
Z = √(R2 + X2) = √(R2 + (XL - XC)2)Where:
- R = Resistance in Ohms (Ω)
- L = Inductance in Henrys (H)
- C = Capacitance in Farads (F)
- f = Operating Frequency in Hertz (Hz)
- Resonant Frequency (fr): The specific frequency at which the inductive and capacitive reactances cancel each other out (XL = XC).
fr = 1 / (2 π √(L C)) - Phase Angle (φ): The phase difference between the voltage and current in the circuit.
φ = arctan(X / R) = arctan((XL - XC) / R)
