Rivet Size Calculator: Determine Optimal Diameter & Grip Length

Calculate Your Rivet Diameter & Grip Length

Ensure the strength and integrity of your fastened assemblies with our free Rivet Size Calculator. Accurately determine the recommended rivet diameter and essential grip length based on your material thicknesses. Avoid failures and achieve professional results every time by selecting the correct fasteners for your engineering and construction projects.

Formula:

The Rivet Size Calculator uses industry-standard guidelines to estimate the appropriate rivet diameter and grip length, ensuring optimal fastening:

  • Rivet Diameter (D): Commonly approximated as three times the thickness of the thickest single plate being joined. This ensures adequate shear strength and prevents pull-through.
  • Grip Length (L): This is the total thickness of the materials being joined, plus an additional length required for forming the secondary (bucked) head. The exact allowance varies based on the rivet type and head style.

Formulas used:

Recommended Diameter (D) ≈ 3 × Tmax
Where: D = Rivet Diameter, Tmax = Thickest Single Plate Thickness

Required Grip Length (L) = Ttotal + (K × D)
Where: L = Grip Length, Ttotal = Total Material Stack-up Thickness, D = Rivet Diameter (calculated diameter is used here), K = Head Type Constant (e.g., 1.5 for Button/Dome Head, 1.0 for Countersunk/Flush Head)
