Understanding 1:1 Concentration Conversions
In analytical chemistry and environmental science, Parts Per Million (PPM) and Micrograms Per Gram (µg/g) are used to express the concentration of a substance within a solid or liquid matrix. While they sound like different units, they are mathematically identical when measuring mass-to-mass ratios.
Why are PPM and µg/g the same?
The metric system makes this conversion simple. There are exactly 1,000,000 micrograms in one gram. Therefore:
- 1 Gram = 1,000,000 µg
- 1 PPM = 1 unit per 1,000,000 units
- 1 µg/g = 1 µg per 1,000,000 µg
Because both represent a ratio of one millionth, the conversion factor is exactly 1. This calculator is provided for convenience and to verify results when documenting lab data or environmental reports.
