Unlock insights into reservoir rocks with our Porosity and Permeability Calculator. Quickly determine a rock's fluid storage capacity (porosity) and its ability to transmit fluids (permeability), essential for petroleum engineering, hydrogeology, and geological exploration. Simplify complex calculations instantly!
Formula:
Porosity Formula
Porosity (φ) quantifies the void space in rock, representing its fluid storage capacity. It's calculated by:
- Volume of Voids (Pore Volume, Vv) = Bulk Volume (Vb) - Grain Volume (Vg)
- Porosity (φ) = (Vv / Vb) × 100%
Where:
- Vv = Volume of voids (Pore Volume)
- Vb = Bulk Volume (total volume of the rock sample)
- Vg = Grain Volume (volume of the solid mineral grains within the rock)
Note: Ensure all volume inputs are in consistent units (e.g., cm³).
Permeability Formula (Darcy's Law)
Permeability (k) measures a rock's ability to allow fluids to flow through its pores. It's determined using Darcy's Law:
k = (Q · μ · L) / (A · ΔP)
Where:
- k = Permeability (result in Darcy)
- Q = Volumetric Flow Rate (cm³/s)
- μ = Fluid Viscosity (cP - centipoise)
- L = Length of the rock sample (cm)
- A = Cross-sectional Area of the rock sample (cm²)
- ΔP = Pressure Drop across the sample (atm)
Note: This specific formula yields permeability in Darcy when the specified CGS/practical units are used.
