The key formulas for milling speed and feed rate are:

  • Spindle Speed (N) in RPM:
    N = (Vc × C) / (π × D)
    Where:
    • N = Spindle Speed (Revolutions Per Minute)
    • Vc = Cutting Speed (Surface Feet per Minute - SFM, or meters per minute - m/min)
    • D = Cutter Diameter (inches or mm)
    • C = Conversion Factor (12 for SFM/inches, 1000 for m/min/mm)
    • π ≈ 3.14159
  • Feed Rate (Fm) in IPM/mm/min:
    Fm = Ft × Nt × N
    Where:
    • Fm = Feed Rate (Inches Per Minute - IPM, or mm per minute - mm/min)
    • Ft = Chip Load per Tooth (Inches Per Tooth - IPT, or mm per tooth - mm/tooth)
    • Nt = Number of Teeth (Flutes) on the cutter
    • N = Spindle Speed (RPM, calculated above)
