Formula:

Ground Speed (GS) = √((TAS · sin(Heading) + Wind Speed · sin(Wind AngleTO))2 + (TAS · cos(Heading) + Wind Speed · cos(Wind AngleTO))2)

Where:

  • TAS: True Airspeed (aircraft speed relative to the air mass) or vessel/vehicle speed relative to its medium.
  • Wind Speed: The speed of the wind or current.
  • Wind AngleTO: The direction towards which the wind or current is blowing. This is calculated as (Wind AngleFROM + 180°) % 360°.
  • Heading: The direction the aircraft, vessel, or vehicle is actually pointing (true heading).
Note: All angles (Heading and Wind AngleTO) must be converted to radians for trigonometric calculations. Angles are measured clockwise from North (0°).
