Geothermal Heat Pump Sizing Calculator: Determine Your HVAC Needs

Calculate Your Geothermal System Requirements

Total heated and cooled square footage of your building.
Estimates your building's energy efficiency characteristics (e.g., window quality, wall R-value).
Your regional climate significantly influences heating and cooling loads.
The comfortable temperature you wish to maintain indoors.
The type of ground heat exchanger system you plan to install.
Ground thermal properties are critical for efficient loop sizing.

Use our free Geothermal Heat Pump Sizing Calculator to accurately estimate the ideal capacity (in tons) and approximate ground loop length for your property. Input your conditioned area, insulation level, and climate zone to get tailored estimates for your geothermal HVAC system, ensuring maximum energy efficiency and comfort year-round.

Formula:

The calculator estimates peak heating and cooling loads, then converts these into the recommended heat pump capacity (in tons) and approximates the necessary ground loop length. The core simplified formulas are:

  • Peak Heating/Cooling Load (BTUh) = Conditioned Area (sq ft) × Dynamic Load Factor (BTUh/sq ft)
  • Heat Pump Capacity (Tons) = Dominant Peak Load (BTUh) / 12,000 BTUh/Ton
  • Estimated Loop Length (feet) = Heat Pump Capacity (Tons) × Dynamic Loop Factor (feet/ton)

Where Dynamic Load Factor and Dynamic Loop Factor are adjusted based on your specific selections for building characteristics, climate, and ground conditions.
