Friction Factor Calculator: Determine Pipe Flow Resistance

Calculate Friction Factor

Utilize our Free Friction Factor Calculator to accurately determine the Darcy friction factor for fluid flow in pipes. Essential for engineers and students, it handles both laminar and turbulent flow conditions based on Reynolds number, pipe diameter, and absolute roughness. Get instant results for fluid dynamics and pressure drop calculations.

Formula:

The friction factor (f) is crucial for calculating head loss in pipe flow. It depends on the flow regime (laminar or turbulent) and pipe roughness.

For Laminar Flow (Reynolds Number, Re < 2300):

f = 64 / Re

For Turbulent Flow (Reynolds Number, Re ≥ 2300):

The calculator uses the explicit Haaland Equation, which approximates the Colebrook-White equation:

1/√f = -1.8 log₁₀ [ (ε/D)/3.7 + (6.9/Re) ]

Rearranged for f:

f = (1 / (-1.8 × log₁₀( (ε/D)/3.7 + (6.9/Re) )))²

Where:

  • f = Darcy Friction Factor (dimensionless)
  • Re = Reynolds Number (dimensionless)
  • ε = Absolute Roughness of Pipe (e.g., meters, mm)
  • D = Internal Pipe Diameter (e.g., meters, mm)
