Freight Class Calculator: Instantly Determine NMFC for LTL Shipping

Calculate Your Freight Class Based on Density

Easily calculate your cargo's freight class (NMFC) with our free online tool. Input dimensions and weight to determine density and find the correct classification, helping you optimize less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping rates and prevent costly re-bills. Understand your National Motor Freight Classification quickly and accurately.

Formula:

Freight class, as defined by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) in the NMFC® (National Motor Freight Classification®), primarily depends on four transportation characteristics: density, stowability, handling, and liability. Our calculator focuses on the most common factor: density.

The density is calculated as:

Density = Weight / (Length × Width × Height)

Where:

  • Weight is the total weight of the shipment.
  • Length, Width, Height are the maximum dimensions of the packaged freight.

A higher density generally results in a lower freight class, leading to more economical shipping rates.
