Easily calculate your cargo's freight class (NMFC) with our free online tool. Input dimensions and weight to determine density and find the correct classification, helping you optimize less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping rates and prevent costly re-bills. Understand your National Motor Freight Classification quickly and accurately.
Formula:
Freight class, as defined by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) in the NMFC® (National Motor Freight Classification®), primarily depends on four transportation characteristics: density, stowability, handling, and liability. Our calculator focuses on the most common factor: density.
The density is calculated as:
Density = Weight / (Length × Width × Height)
Where:
- Weight is the total weight of the shipment.
- Length, Width, Height are the maximum dimensions of the packaged freight.
A higher density generally results in a lower freight class, leading to more economical shipping rates.
