Fabric Calculator: Precisely Estimate Fabric Yardage for Your Projects

Calculate Your Fabric Needs

Finished length of one piece.
Finished width of one piece.
How many of these pieces do you need?
The usable width of your fabric roll.
Allowance per edge (e.g., 0.5 for a 0.5" seam/hem).

Our Fabric Calculator helps you determine the precise amount of material needed for your sewing, quilting, or crafting projects. Input your item dimensions, quantity, fabric width, and seam allowance to get accurate yardage or meterage instantly.

Formula:

Effective Item Length = Item Length + (Seam Allowance × 2)
Effective Item Width = Item Width + (Seam Allowance × 2)

Items Per Fabric Width = floor(Fabric Width / Effective Item Width)
Number of Fabric Rows = ceil(Number of Items / Items Per Fabric Width)
Total Fabric Length = Number of Fabric Rows × Effective Item Length

Where:

  • Item Length: Desired length of one finished piece.
  • Item Width: Desired width of one finished piece.
  • Number of Items: Total identical pieces required.
  • Seam Allowance: Additional length/width per edge for hems or seams. (Applied to both ends of length and width).
  • Fabric Width: The usable width of your chosen fabric roll.
  • Total Fabric Length: The final linear length of fabric to purchase.
