Formula:
The EORTC (European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer) risk calculator for Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer (NMIBC) uses specific pathological factors to predict the likelihood of tumor recurrence and progression.
Each factor is assigned a point value, and these points are summed to determine a total score, which then correlates to a low, intermediate, or high-risk category with associated recurrence and progression percentages.
Recurrence Score Variables:
- Number of Tumors: Single (0 points), Multiple (1 point)
- Tumor Size: <3 cm (0 points), ≥3 cm (1 point)
- Prior Recurrence Rate: Primary tumor or <1 recurrence/year (0 points), ≥1 recurrence/year (1 point)
- Pathological T Stage: Ta (0 points), T1 (1 point)
- Carcinoma In Situ (CIS): Absent (0 points), Present (1 point)
- Grade: G1 (0 points), G2 (1 point), G3 (2 points)
Total Recurrence Score: Sum of points from these 6 factors.
Progression Score Variables:
- Prior Recurrence Rate: Primary tumor or <1 recurrence/year (0 points), ≥1 recurrence/year (1 point)
- Pathological T Stage: Ta (0 points), T1 (1 point)
- Carcinoma In Situ (CIS): Absent (0 points), Present (1 point)
- Grade: G1 (0 points), G2 (1 point), G3 (2 points)
Total Progression Score: Sum of points from these 4 factors.
The calculator aggregates these scores to place the patient into a specific risk group for recurrence and progression, providing associated 1-year and 5-year probabilities.
