Enzyme Activity Calculator: Determine IU, Katal & Specific Activity

Calculate Your Enzyme Activity Now

Enter in M-1 cm-1 (L mol-1 cm-1).
Standard cuvette path length is 1 cm.
Volume of the enzymatic reaction mixture in mL.
Duration of the enzyme reaction in minutes.
Total amount of enzyme (protein) in the reaction, in mg.

Unravel enzyme kinetics with our Enzyme Activity Calculator. Input absorbance change, molar extinction coefficient, reaction volume, and time to instantly compute enzyme activity in μmol/min (IU), katal, and specific activity (μmol/min/mg). Perfect for biochemical assays and research, this tool simplifies complex enzymatic calculations.

Formula:

The calculator uses a derived form of the Beer-Lambert Law to determine enzyme activity:

  • Enzyme Activity (IU) = (ΔA × V × 1000) / (ε × b × Δt)
  • Specific Activity = Enzyme Activity (IU) / Enzyme Amount
  • Enzyme Activity (kat) = Enzyme Activity (IU) / 60,000,000

Where:

  • ΔA = Change in Absorbance (unitless)
  • V = Reaction Volume (mL)
  • ε = Molar Extinction Coefficient (M-1 cm-1 or L mol-1 cm-1)
  • b = Path Length (cm)
  • Δt = Reaction Time (minutes)
  • Enzyme Amount = Amount of Enzyme (mg protein)
