λobs = λ0 × ( (v ± vs) / (v ± vo) )

Where:

  • λobs: Observed Wavelength (in meters, m)
  • λ0: Original (Source) Wavelength (in meters, m)
  • v: Speed of Wave in the medium (e.g., speed of sound in air, speed of light in vacuum) (in meters per second, m/s)
  • Numerator term (v ± vs):
    • Use v - vs if the source is moving towards the observer.
    • Use v + vs if the source is moving away from the observer.
  • Denominator term (v ± vo):
    • Use v + vo if the observer is moving towards the source.
    • Use v - vo if the observer is moving away from the source.
