Depth of Field (DOF) Calculator for Photographers

Calculate Your Photography's Depth of Field

Distance from camera to subject.
Typical values: Full-frame: 0.029mm, APS-C (Canon): 0.019mm, APS-C (Nikon/Sony): 0.020mm, Micro 4/3: 0.015mm

Master your camera's focus with our free Depth of Field (DOF) Calculator. Quickly determine near focus distance, far focus distance, and total DOF using your camera's focal length, aperture, subject distance, and circle of confusion. Essential for stunning photographic results.

Understanding DOF: Key Formulas

The Depth of Field (DOF) calculation involves several interconnected formulas:

  • Hyperfocal Distance (H): H = f2 / (N * c)
  • Near Focus Distance (NFD): NFD = (H * s) / (H + (s - f))
  • Far Focus Distance (FFD): FFD = (H * s) / (H - (s - f))
  • Depth of Field (DOF): DOF = FFD - NFD

Where:

  • f = Focal Length (e.g., in mm)
  • N = Aperture (f-stop number)
  • c = Circle of Confusion (e.g., in mm)
  • s = Subject Distance (e.g., in mm)

For accurate results, ensure all linear measurements (f, c, s) are in the same units during calculation.
