Bullet Energy Calculator: Muzzle & Kinetic Energy (ft-lbs, Joules)

Calculate Bullet Muzzle Energy

Easily calculate the kinetic energy of a bullet, also known as muzzle energy, using its mass and velocity. Our free online Bullet Energy Calculator provides results in both foot-pounds (ft-lbs) and Joules, essential for ballistics, hunting, and firearm enthusiasts. Quickly find the energy for your rifle, pistol, or shotgun loads.

Formula:

The kinetic energy (E) of a bullet, often referred to as muzzle energy, is calculated using its mass (m) and velocity (v). The fundamental formula is:

E = ½mv²

Where:

  • E = Kinetic Energy (typically in Joules or converted to foot-pounds)
  • m = Mass of the bullet (in kilograms for Joules, or grains for ft-lbs conversion)
  • v = Velocity of the bullet (in meters per second for Joules, or feet per second for ft-lbs conversion)

For convenience, our calculator also uses the industry-standard formula for foot-pounds:

E (ft-lbs) = (Mass in grains × Velocity in fps²) / 450240
