Formula:
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated using the following formula:
BMI = Weight (kg) / (Height (m))2
For children and teens, BMI is interpreted differently than for adults. It is plotted on age- and gender-specific growth charts to determine a BMI-for-age percentile. This percentile indicates how a child's weight compares to other children of the same age and sex.
- Underweight: Below the 5th percentile
- Healthy Weight: 5th percentile to less than the 85th percentile
- Overweight: 85th percentile to less than the 95th percentile
- Obese: 95th percentile or greater
