Utilize our user-friendly ASA Physical Status Classification Calculator to efficiently assess a patient's overall health and predict potential risks associated with anesthesia and surgery. This vital tool aids medical professionals in patient management and surgical planning, improving safety and outcomes.
Formula:
The ASA Physical Status Classification is not a mathematical formula but a descriptive system categorized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. It evaluates a patient's overall health before surgery based on the severity of systemic diseases:
- ASA I: A normal healthy patient.
- ASA II: A patient with mild systemic disease (e.g., controlled hypertension, well-controlled diabetes without systemic complications, obesity BMI 30-40).
- ASA III: A patient with severe systemic disease that is not a constant threat to life (e.g., uncontrolled hypertension/diabetes, morbid obesity BMI >40, stable angina, history of MI/CVA/TIA/CAD >3 months ago).
- ASA IV: A patient with severe systemic disease that is a constant threat to life (e.g., recent MI/CVA/TIA <3 months ago, ongoing cardiac ischemia, severe valvular disease, sepsis, DIC, ARDS, ESRD not on regular dialysis).
- ASA V: A moribund patient who is not expected to survive without the operation (e.g., ruptured abdominal/thoracic aneurysm, massive trauma, intracranial bleed with mass effect, multiple organ dysfunction).
- ASA VI: A declared brain-dead patient whose organs are being removed for donor purposes.
- 'E' (Emergency): Added to any class to denote an emergency procedure (e.g., ASA III-E).
The calculator determines the appropriate classification based on your input regarding the patient's health status.
