Air Conditioner (AC) Unit Tonnage Calculator

Calculate Your AC Unit Tonnage

Enter the total area of the room(s) to be cooled.
Standard is 8-10 feet. Taller ceilings may slightly increase BTU needs.
How many people typically occupy the space?
Count all windows in the space.
How well insulated is your space?
Your geographic location's typical summer temperatures.
How much direct sunlight does the room receive?

Discover the ideal AC unit size for your space with our user-friendly Air Conditioner (AC) Unit Tonnage Calculator. Accurately determine the BTU and tonnage required to ensure efficient cooling, save energy, and enhance comfort in your home or office. Avoid common mistakes of oversizing or undersizing your unit for optimal performance.

Formula:

Determining the right AC tonnage is crucial for efficient cooling. While a precise calculation requires a professional HVAC assessment, our calculator uses a simplified model based on several key factors to estimate your needs:

  • Room Area: The square footage of the space to be cooled.
  • Number of Occupants: Each person generates body heat, impacting cooling load.
  • Number of Windows: Windows allow heat to enter, especially with direct sunlight.
  • Insulation Quality: Good insulation reduces heat transfer.
  • Climate Zone: Hotter climates require more cooling capacity.
  • Sun Exposure: Direct sun exposure significantly increases heat gain.

The core principle is to calculate the total heat load in BTUs (British Thermal Units) per hour, then convert it to tonnage:

1 Ton of AC = 12,000 BTU/hour

Our calculator combines these factors to provide an estimated BTU/hr requirement, which is then divided by 12,000 to give you the recommended AC tonnage.
