What Is Grain Fineness Number

A system developed by AFS for rapidly expressing the average grain size of a given sand. It approximates the number of meshes per inch of that sieve that would just pass the sample if its grains of uniform size. It is approximately proportional to the surface area per unit of weight of sand, exclusive of clay.

Fineness modulus of sand (fine aggregate) is an index number which represents the mean size of the particles in sand. It is calculated by performing sieve analysis with standard sieves. The cumulative percentage retained on each sieve is added and subtracted by 100 gives the value of fineness modulus.

This calculator calculates the grain fineness number using cumulative percentage weight retained values.

Fineness Modulus of Sand Calculation

Formula:

GFN = C ÷ 100

Where,

C is cumulative percentage weight retained
GFN is grain fineness number
